Module 3 • Model Essay & Teacher Analysis

Model Essay (210 Words)

A warm cozy living room scene where family members of different generations and young friends share tea and conversation
Paragraph 1 • Introduction

In this essay I will discuss whether close friends or family are more important to a person. I think both are important for a happy life, but in different ways.

Why this works: The starter tells the reader what the essay is about.
Paragraph 2 • Body 1: The Role of Friends

Some people believe that close friends are more important, because friends are the same age and share the same interests. Teenagers, for instance, often talk to their friends about problems that they can't talk about at home. Many teenagers would rather tell a secret to an honest friend than to their parents. Also, friends often understand school problems better than older people, because they live through the same things. With good friends, you can build trust quickly, and you feel less alone.

Why this works: 'would rather' + base verb shows what you prefer; 'for instance' gives an example.
Paragraph 3 • Body 2: The Role of Family

However, others argue that family will always matter more. Friends can change or move away, but a loyal relative usually stays with you for life. Family is also there when we are ill or have no money. When there is a big problem in a family, people had better talk about it and offer forgiveness, because a long argument can hurt everybody.

Why this works: 'had better' + base verb gives strong advice about a real problem.
Paragraph 4 • Conclusion & Personal Stance

In conclusion, friends give us fun and support every day, but family stays with us for life. In my view, a person ought to keep strong ties with both of them, even when life is busy.

Why this works: 'ought to' + base verb gives milder advice, and 'in my view' shows your own opinion.
