Being a Loyal & Honest Friend

When friends argue or have a hard choice to make, the right advice matters. English has different patterns for a strong warning, a gentle idea of what is right, a personal choice, and a friendly suggestion.

Core Grammar Rules

Review these four essential structures before attempting the challenges below.

1. had better Strong Advice / Warning

had better + base verb gives strong advice about a real problem, and the negative is had better not.

💬 Example: "She had better not ignore his messages."
2. ought to Mild Advice / What is Right

ought to + base verb gives milder advice or says what is right, and the negative is ought not to.

💬 Example: "We ought not to forget her birthday."
3. would rather Preferences

would rather + base verb (no to) shows a preference, and than introduces the other choice.

💬 Example: "I would rather walk than wait for him."
4. if I were you Friendly Suggestion

if I were you + would + base verb is a friendly way to give advice, and were is used for I.

💬 Example: "If I were you, I would say sorry first."

✅ Remember the Patterns

  • • would rather go (base verb without to)
  • • had better not (put not directly after better)
  • • If I were you, I would... (use were, not was)

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • • would rather to stay ➔ would rather stay
  • • had better to go ➔ had better go
  • • ought to not stay ➔ ought not to stay
