Model Answer and Why It Works

Read the model text below and see how key phrases create clear comparisons.

Sample Report (131 words)

Full Model

The table compares the amount of time people of different ages spent exercising each week in 2010 and 2020.

Overall, exercise hours increased in three out of the four categories, with the sole exception of the youngest cohort. Furthermore, middle-aged individuals dedicated the highest number of hours to exercise by the end of the period.

In 2010, the 16–24 age bracket stood at the highest level with 6 hours weekly, but this figure dropped to 4 hours in 2020. In sharp contrast, those aged 45–64 began at 3 hours and subsequently climbed to 5 hours, becoming the most active group.

Meanwhile, average activity among individuals aged 25–44 doubled from 2 hours to 4 hours per week. A similar relative pattern occurred in the oldest bracket (65 and over), where exercise duration saw a twofold increase from 1 hour to 2 hours.

Why This Works: Teacher's Commentary

Clear Overview

Notice how the second paragraph gives a birds-eye view: it highlights that three groups rose while only one dropped (using with the sole exception of) and identifies who was highest in 2020.

Natural Contrast

The linker in sharp contrast smoothly pairs the decline in the youngest group (6 to 4) directly against the rise in 45–64 year-olds (3 to 5).

Mathematical Precision

Instead of repeating "went up," the writer notices proportionality: 2 to 4 is doubled from, and 1 to 2 is phrased as saw a twofold increase.

Accurate Starting Figure

Using stood at the highest level anchors the baseline year cleanly before describing the change ten years later.
