✍️ Full Model Report

The table compares commuting methods in one European city between 2005 and 2025. Overall, driving remained the primary mode of travel despite a marked decline, while public transport and cycling gained popularity, and walking dropped substantially.

In 2005, over half of all commuters travelled by car (52%). However, this figure dropped by 14 percentage points to 38% in 2025. In contrast, train or metro use experienced significant growth, increasing from 15% to a quarter of all workers.

Meanwhile, cycling had the biggest relative increase, as bicycle use more than doubled from 5% to 12%. Bus travel rose slightly from 18% to 20%, but it moved from second to third place, behind train or metro. Conversely, the share of people walking halved, falling from 10% to 5%.

Teacher's Notes: Why These Phrases Work

Short, practical reasons to adopt these 7 expressions in your own data summaries.

1. "remained the primary mode"

Shows the car stayed at #1 even while its share dropped. It captures rank and stability in one natural phrase instead of repeating "was the most popular".

2. "dropped by 14 percentage points"

Essential math accuracy: 52% minus 38% equals 14 percentage points. Saying "dropped by 14%" would be wrong, because it mixes up percentage points with a percentage change.

3. "experienced significant growth"

Pairs an active reporting verb with an adjective-noun combination. This creates grammatical variety so you do not rely solely on "increased significantly".

4. "to a quarter of all workers"

Rephrases 25% into a clean, everyday fraction. Converting exact percentages into fraction equivalents keeps your writing lively and reader-friendly.

5. "more than doubled"

Spot-on comparison: double of 5% is 10%, so 12% is unmistakably "more than doubled". It shows rapid growth far better than a plain "rose by 7 percentage points".

6. "rose slightly"

Ideal for small shifts. Moving from 18% to 20% is modest, so "slightly" conveys the exact scale without exaggerating the change.

7. "halved, falling from [10% to 5%]"

Going straight from 10% to 5% is an exact 50% decrease. Using the concise verb "halved" followed immediately by raw figures gives you both great style and verifiable facts.
