📖 High-Scoring Model Answer

136 Words

The table compares the proportion of four different types of vessel visiting a single port between 2010 and 2020.

Overall, cargo ships accounted for the largest share of port arrivals in both years despite a slight decline. Meanwhile, cruise ships experienced dramatic growth, whereas the percentage of fishing boats fell significantly.

In 2010, cargo ships were the most common vessel type at 48%, but this figure dropped by 7 percentage points to 41% in 2020. In contrast, cruise ships expanded rapidly; their share more than tripled from 8% to 27%, making them the second largest category by 2020.

Conversely, fishing boats witnessed a sharp decrease from 27% in 2010 to 12% in 2020, moving from second place to the smallest group. Finally, the share of ferries rose slightly from 17% to 20% over the ten-year period.

💡 Why these phrases work:

1. Proportion Phrase

"accounted for the largest share"

A clear, formal way to highlight the highest category without repeating the adjective "biggest".

2. Overview Trend

"experienced dramatic growth"

Summarizes a strong upward trend smoothly for your overview paragraph.

3. Action + Adverb

"fell significantly"

Combines a strong verb with a natural modifier to describe a big reduction.

4. Accurate Difference

"dropped by 7 percentage points"

Uses the correct term when subtracting one percentage from another (48% - 41% = 7 percentage points).

5. Ratio Multiplier

"more than tripled"

Mathematically precise; 8% to 27% is more than 3 times (8 x 3 = 24).

6. Verb + Noun

"witnessed a sharp decrease"

Shows variation by placing the change in a noun phrase ('a sharp decrease') with 'witnessed'.

7. Minor Increase

"rose slightly"

Accurately describes small increases (17% to 20%) without overstating the trend.
