3. Useful Sentence Patterns

Use these three easy sentence frames to tell stories and describe outdoor habits clearly.

1

Pattern: I was ... when ...

Telling a quick story

Example:

"I was setting up my small green tent when a cold wind blew."

Why this works:

The first part (was doing) shows an action in progress. The second part (when something happened) tells the surprise or next event.

2

Pattern: While we were ..., ...

Connecting two actions in the past

Example:

"While we were paddling near the lake shore, we spotted three big ducks."

Why this works:

Use while at the start to set the background scene, then add a simple comma and what you noticed.

3

Pattern: I always make sure to ... because ...

Giving your outdoor habit and reason

Example:

"I always make sure to bring extra water bottles because hiking makes me thirsty."

Why this works:

Examiners like to hear simple reasons. This frame helps you give a complete answer without stopping after two words.

Quick Check: Pattern Test
