👂 Mistakes to Listen For (Referee Warning List)
⚠️ Common Error #1: Inverted When / While
"While we walked, it was starting to rain."
✅ "While we were walking, it started to rain."
Rule: Background ongoing actions take Continuous (was/were -ing); the sudden interrupting event takes Past Simple.
⚠️ Common Error #2: Stative Verbs in Continuous
"We were knowing the way to the accommodation."
✅ "We knew the way to the accommodation."
Rule: Verbs of state, mental perception, or possession (know, understand, want, believe) rarely take Past Continuous in standard B1 usage.
Game Variations & Differentiation
Written Scaffolding
Allow squads to write their complete 4–5 sentence story on paper during the 5-minute planning phase before delivering it orally.
Sentence Relay
Strict turn-taking rule: exactly one sentence per speaker. Squad members must switch immediately after each full clause without conferring.
Vocab Overload
Teams must integrate at least 4 official Unit vocabulary words (e.g. itinerary, accommodation, sightseeing, souvenir) to unlock the full grammar score.
Wildcard Plot Twist!
Squads that plan their story in under 3 minutes draw a 4th card (any colour) from the deck and have only 30 seconds to weave an instant plot twist into their tale!
Closing Plenary Questions

Focus: Story coherence & dramatic tension.
Grammar Architecture
"How did combining 'while' (continuous background) and 'when' (sudden event) make the stories sound more cinematic and exciting?"
Focus: Reflecting on tense function in spoken narrative.
