Grammar Rules: Expressing Degree & Result

Review how each structure connects cause and consequence in daily sleep situations:

Pattern 1

so + adj / adv + that

Focuses on an intense quality leading to a result.

• "The room was so noisy that nobody could rest."
• "My brother is so sleepy that he yawns all through dinner."

Pattern 2

such + a/an + adj + noun + that

Emphasizes a noun phrase that produces an outcome.

• "It was such a loud night that I woke up twice."
• "It was such a long nap that I woke up hungry."

Pattern 3

too + adj + to + base verb

Means more than needed; creates a negative result.

• "I was too tired to cook dinner."
• "This bed is too hard to sleep on."

Pattern 4

adj + enough / enough + noun

Shows the sufficient amount or degree to do something.

• "She is calm enough to fall asleep quickly, and she has enough time."
• "This blanket is thick enough to keep me comfortable all night."

✅ Remember the word order

  • Adjective comes BEFORE enough: "The room is quiet enough to rest."
  • Noun comes AFTER enough: "I don't have enough blankets tonight."
  • Such takes a noun: "such a long night", NOT "so long night".

⚠️ Watch out for "Too"

"Too" means more than is good, with a problem as the result: "I had too much coffee to sleep." (Because of the coffee, I could not sleep). Do not say "too soft that I slept well" when you mean a positive result!
