Four Simple Rules
Learn the words that tell who owns something, like when you borrow and lend.
mine, yours, hers: nothing after them
Use mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs when you do not say the thing again. They stand alone, so no thing comes after them. Say "mine", or say "my jacket". Do not say "mine jacket".
my scarf or mine
Words like my, your, her, our and their come before a thing: my scarf, our bicycle. Words like theirs or ours take the place of the whole thing: "theirs" means "their bicycle". The word his is the same in both places.
yours, not your's
Do not put a little mark ' in yours, hers, ours or theirs. Write each one as one word. Say "yours", not "your's". A little mark is only for names, like Anna's scarf.
a friend of mine, a friend of hers
a friend of mine means one of my friends. After of, use mine, yours, his, hers, ours or theirs. Say "a friend of mine", not "a friend of me" and not "a my friend".
