Unless we have clean bottled water and tins of food, we will be hungry and dehydrated. Finally, we will stay warm with our blanket if the temperature drops."
"As soon as the alarm sounds, we will grab our go-bag and leave. We will escape the danger if we put on our warm coats immediately. Unless we carry our first-aid box, we will not be able to treat cuts or injuries. When we reach safety, we will call our relatives if our phone charger is in the bag."
"If the power will go off, we will use a torch."
"If the power goes off, we will use a torch."
⚠️ Rule: Never put 'will' directly inside the condition clause (after if / unless / when / as soon as).
Game Variations & Differentiation
Scaffolded Frames
Provide pre-written clause halves on the board for lower-confidence learners to fill in.
Item Embargo
Ban 2 obvious items (e.g. no torch or bottle of water) to force creative justification of alternate items.
Two unless sentences
Teams must use unless in at least two of their four pitch sentences.
Surprise Complication
Introduce an emergency twist halfway through: "Water enters the room! You must swap 1 item now!"
Closing Reflection Questions
Which item was the most popular across all go-bags and why?
How did using 'unless' change your survival plan?
What is one item not on the cards that your family really needs at home?
