The Writing Task: Income of a Coastal Village
In this task you will describe a table that shows where the income of one coastal village came from in three different years.
Writing Prompt
The table gives information about the sources of income of one coastal village in 1995, 2005 and 2020, as a percentage of the village's total income. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
Income of a coastal village (% of total income)
Proportional share across three benchmark years: 1995, 2005, and 2020.
| Source of income | 1995 | 2005 | 2020 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fishing | 45% | 32% | 18% |
| Farming | 30% | 24% | 12% |
| Tourism | 10% | 28% | 52% |
| Other jobs | 15% | 16% | 18% |

Model Response: Coastal Village Income
Reading a high-performing response helps you see how data points, comparisons, and paragraph boundaries work together in practice. The sample below shows how to group four economic sectors logically without unnecessary words or complicated grammar.
How to Study This Sample
Pay close attention to how the writer compares the starting year (1995) to the final year (2020), highlights significant milestones in between, and selects precise ratio terms like "nearly tripled" and "more than fivefold". Notice too that the report stays concise and focused: about 154 words that cover every essential pattern in the table.
Full Model Text
Organised in four clear paragraphs: Introduction, Overview, Traditional Sectors, and Modern Growth.
The table compares the proportion of income generated by four different economic sectors in one coastal village in 1995, 2005, and 2020.
Overall, tourism experienced dramatic growth and emerged as the dominant source of income, whereas the traditional industries of fishing and farming suffered steep downturns. By contrast, other occupations exhibited modest, steady increases throughout the period.
In 1995, fishing was the primary contributor, accounting for 45% of total village revenue, followed by farming at 30%. However, fishing earnings fell by more than half to 18% by 2020. Similarly, farming income dropped continuously over the twenty-five years, finishing at 12%, which represented a reduction of more than half.
Conversely, tourism initially generated merely 10% of total revenue in 1995. By 2005, this proportion had nearly tripled to 28%, before surging to 52% in 2020, an increase of more than fivefold. Meanwhile, other jobs grew marginally from 15% to 18%, maintaining a relatively stable share.
Key Phrases: Why This Works
Detailed notes on seven useful expressions selected directly from the model answer.
"accounting for 45% of total village revenue"
Connects a specific category to its numerical proportion smoothly in a short phrase, avoiding the repeated use of "was 45%".
"fell by more than half"
Expresses a proportional relationship between 45% and 18% concisely. Mathematical ratios create sharper academic comparisons than simple raw subtraction.
"dropped continuously over the twenty-five years"
Demonstrates an overall trajectory across all three checkpoints (30% to 24% to 12%) without forcing the reader through repetitive year-by-year listings.
"nearly tripled"
Gives the size of the change in one word: 10% to 28% is 2.8 times, just under three times, so 'nearly' is the honest word.
"surging to 52%"
A lively verb for a fast rise, followed by to and the new figure, so the reader sees where it ended: more than half of all income.
"an increase of more than fivefold"
Captures total net change over the entire span (from 10% to 52% is 5.2 times the original value). It synthesizes long-range development effectively.
"maintaining a relatively stable share"
Succinctly summarizes minor numerical movement (15% to 16% to 18%). It tells the reader that while there was slight growth, the overall standing of this category remained virtually steady.
