B2 Sample Essay

Working in Teams vs. Working Individually

Word count: 275 words

Paragraph 1: Introduction

In this essay I will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of the growing demand for teamwork in modern workplaces. In recent years, many managers prefer employees who can cooperate easily on group tasks rather than individual workers sitting in separate offices. While this approach builds strong workplace relationships, it also brings a few practical problems for daily productivity.

Paragraph 2: Advantages

One advantage is that collaboration allows staff members to share useful knowledge and support each other during difficult projects. When workers communicate well, every teammate can contribute different skills to reach a common goal. For example, a senior colleague can act as a helpful mentor to guide newer staff, which helps the whole group solve tasks faster.

Furthermore, academic research shows that sharing responsibilities reduces individual stress because staff members can rely on one another when unexpected difficulties appear.

📌 Pattern note: Words like "research" cannot be counted, so they take a singular verb (like "Good advice is hard to find.").

Consequently, the team has achieved better results on complex assignments than single workers could produce alone.

📌 Pattern note: When a group acts together as one body, it takes a singular verb (like "The team has won.").

Paragraph 3: Disadvantages

However, one disadvantage is that disagreements between colleagues can quickly harm group harmony and slow down progress. When coworkers hold opposite opinions about how to coordinate a project, personal conflict often develops in the workplace. In such situations, people may waste valuable time arguing instead of working, and frustrated staff might even blame others for missed deadlines.

In addition, when workers fail to reach a sensible compromise, project equipment is sometimes used inefficiently, and progress stops completely.

📌 Pattern note: Words like "equipment" are uncountable and take a singular verb (like "Safety equipment is necessary.").

Paragraph 4: Conclusion

In conclusion, working in a group provides valuable mutual support and encourages teammates to learn from one another, but it can also cause serious personal friction. In my view, companies should appoint a clear leader who can handle disagreements early so that every group functions smoothly and productively.

🔍 Style Analysis Questions

Answer these three questions to confirm how a strong B2 student organizes ideas, links sentences, and controls grammar.

1. How does the model essay introduce its main body paragraphs to help the reader follow the argument?

____ a. By beginning with personal stories about real company managers. ____ b. By using clear starter phrases that signpost one side of the topic at a time. ____ c. By repeating the exact prompt question at the start of every section.

2. In the sentence "Furthermore, academic research shows that sharing responsibilities reduces individual stress...", why is the singular verb "shows" used?

____ a. Because the word comes directly after the linking word 'Furthermore'. ____ b. Because 'research' refers to a single experiment done in one laboratory. ____ c. Because 'research' is an uncountable noun and always pairs with a singular verb.

3. What makes the conclusion of this model essay appropriate for a strong B2 IELTS essay?

____ a. It summarizes both sides calmly and adds a practical suggestion introduced by "In my view". ____ b. It lists government statistics to prove that working alone is always worse. ____ c. It asks three new questions to let the examiner decide the answer.
