In this essay I will discuss both viewpoints about regulating junk food marketing versus protecting individual choice, before sharing my own view. These days a lot of food is processed and has chemical additives in it, so people ask who should decide what we eat.
Some people believe that strict advertising limits are necessary because adverts have a big effect on our appetite. When teenagers keep seeing sugary drinks and salty snacks, they often get a strong craving. Not only do these adverts encourage a high daily calorie intake, but they also add to rising obesity.
Also, many ready meals are deficient in dietary fibre and protein, so supporters argue that limiting these adverts helps families eat better.
However, others argue that adults should be free to choose what they eat. In their view, the government should not control private life because people have the right to decide their own portion sizes. In daily life, people must decide whether to prepare healthy home-cooked dinners or to buy fast food on their way home.
Also, neither strict advertising bans nor high sales taxes will change eating habits if people lack basic nutritional knowledge.
Instead of limiting adverts, they suggest that teaching cooking skills in schools would work better.
In conclusion, both government advertising rules and personal freedom matter for healthier eating.
In my view, the government should limit adverts aimed at children, but adults must stay responsible for their own nutrient intake.
