Model paragraph (66 words)
My favourite sport is basketball. I play it or watch it three times a week with my friends from school. I usually run fast, pass the ball to my team, and try to score points. At the moment I am practising my free throws in the local park. I like it because it keeps me fit and healthy, and we always have lots of fun together.
Why this works: helpful phrases
1. My favourite sport is...
This starts your text directly and tells the reader your chosen sport straight away.
2. I play it or watch it...
This tells how often you do the activity, for example 'three times a week' or 'every Saturday'.
3. I usually...
Use present simple verbs here (like 'run' and 'pass') to share your regular actions in the sport.
4. At the moment I am...
This changes to the present continuous tense to tell what you are doing right now or these days.
5. I like it because...
Use 'because' followed by a full simple reason to explain why the sport makes you happy.
