The Oldest Camera Picture

Level: A2
The earliest surviving camera photograph taken from an upstairs window in France, showing soft grey and sepia shadows of

The oldest photograph made with a camera that still exists comes from France. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce made it in 1826 or 1827. He worked in a quiet room on the upper floor of his house. To make the picture, he put a metal plate into a simple camera near an open window. He waited patiently. After several days in the sunlight, the plate showed the yard, some buildings and some trees outside. The Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas, bought the picture in 1963 and keeps it today.

🔍 Key Words

  • metal plate: a flat, thin piece of hard metal used before film or paper photos existed.
  • upper floor: a room on the higher level of a building (upstairs).
  • yard: an open piece of land right beside a house or building.

💡 Why This Works

Look at how we connect two facts naturally:

"I didn't bring my tripod, so I held the camera and took a snapshot."

The word so tells us what happened as a result.
