L Learner Steps

Complete the 12 practice questions to test your sentence rewrites, gap-fills, and error corrections.

Pattern Spotlight

"Inspectors always check the certification carefully before they sign."

Notice how time frequency sits before the action word, while manner sits after the target object.

📖 Formal Placement Rules

Rule 1: Middle Position Frequency & Degree

Put words like always or never in the middle of your sentence. They go after helping words like is or has, but before the main action word. Do not put them at the end.

Compliance Examples:

1. The regulator has rarely waived a mandatory inspection.

2. The compliance report is always submitted on time.

Rule 2: End Position Manner, Place & Time

Put words that describe how, where, or when at the very end. Never split the action word and the thing receiving the action. Keep those two words side by side.

Compliance Examples:

1. The committee approved the new standard unanimously last month.

2. Officers enforce the new legislation strictly.

Rule 3: Front Position Setting the Scene

You can start a sentence with a time expression to set the background. Place a comma right after it. Words like always or never should not start normal statements.

Compliance Examples:

1. Until recently, the council had no power to close an unsafe shop.

2. In 2024, the board tightened safety standards.

Rule 4: Focusing Words Only & Even

Place words like only or even right before the exact word you want to highlight. If you move them to a different spot, your sentence changes its meaning.

Compliance Examples:

1. The auditors read only the summary of the report.

2. The director signed even the minor certification.
