📜 Grammar Rules Overview

Study how we make strong and weak guesses about past events.

must have + past participle
You use this when you are almost sure that something happened, because the clues point to it. It is a strong guess about the past, not something that you saw.

• The floor is black, so there must have been a fire here.

• They found heavy stone blocks, so ancient workers must have built this ruin with strong tools.

can't have + past participle
You use this when you are almost sure that something did not happen, because the clues make it impossible. Couldn't have means the same, and you do not say mustn't have for this meaning.

• The cup can't have belonged to a child, because it is far too big.

• They can't have used this tiny pottery dish for cooking big meals.

might have / could have + past participle
You use this when something maybe happened and you are not sure, because clues allow more than one possibility. Might not have means that maybe it did not happen.

• The old man might have hidden the coins before he left.

• An artist could have carved this symbol on the remains of the statue.

modal + have + past participle
After the modal word, always put have (never has or had) and then a past participle, for every subject. For the verb be, use been.

• The guards must have left their weapon at the temple gate.

• She could have dropped it on the way home.
