Present Wishes = Past Verb Form
1 wish + Past Simple
"I wish I spoke better English."
Reality: I don't speak well now, but I want to change it.
2 if only + Past Simple
"If only I had more time."
Stronger feeling: Shows more regret or emotional emphasis.
3 wish / if only + WERE
"I wish I were more confident."
Formal & standard for all subjects (I / he / she / it were).
4 wish + COULD + verb
"I wish I could understand films without subtitles."
Ability / permission: Used instead of can for wishes.
💡 Golden Rule: Never use present tense verbs (am, have, speak, can) directly after wish or if only when wishing about now!
