Learner Steps
First, read the 4 easy rules and look at the travel examples. Then, complete the 12 challenge questions from easy to hard.
The 4 Golden Rules
The Rule
We use have / has + the past participle to talk about an experience in your life, and we do not say when it happened.
Real Example
“My uncle has climbed a very high tower.”
The Rule
To ask about experience we say Have you ever + past participle, and we answer Yes, I have or No, I haven't.
Real Example
“Have you ever met a tour guide?”
The Rule
Never means not at any time; it goes before the past participle and we do not add not.
Real Example
“My sister has never seen the sea.”
The Rule
Been to means you went there and came back; gone to means the person is still there.
Real Example
“Tom has been to the palace, and now he is at home.”
Figure 1: Sightseeing memories and unforgettable adventures.
Sightseeing in Your Life
When we travel, we collect stories. Notice how we connect two life experiences without giving an exact day or year:
Pattern Model
“I have never visited a castle, but I have seen a famous statue.”
🔄 Quick Check: Been to vs Gone to
have / has been to
Visited the place and returned already.
have / has gone to
Traveled there and is still in that place.
