Grammar Rules & Patterns
Study the four main structures before starting the exercises.
Use if with the present simple for the condition, and will with the base verb for the result. When the if part comes first, put a comma after it. The if part can also come second: then do not use a comma.
If it is chilly, we will wear coats.
If there is lightning tonight, I will stay indoors.
Unless means if not. Never put not after unless because it already has a negative meaning.
We will walk home unless it rains.
I will walk to school unless there is thunder.
Use if when something might happen (maybe). Use when when you are sure it happens (certain).
If it is mild, we will sit outside.
When the drizzle stops, we will go to the park.
To ask a question, put will before the person (subject). Keep the if part in the present simple.
What will you do if it is cold?
What will you wear if it is chilly?
