📌 The 4 Sport Rules

Read the simple rule for each verb and remember the examples.

1

Rule 1: PLAY

Ball & Team Games

Use play with sports that have a ball and a team or two players. Do not say do football or go hockey. We use this verb for games where you score points against an opponent.

⭐ "My friends play hockey on Saturday."
⭐ "They play volleyball at the beach."
2

Rule 2: GO + -ING

Moving Sports

Use go with sports that end in -ing where you move on your own or in a group. Do not use play with these activities. Avoid mistakes like play swimming or do cycling.

⭐ "We go skating in winter."
⭐ "I go cycling every Sunday morning."
3

Rule 3: DO

Martial Arts & Exercise

Use do for martial arts and exercise without a ball. Never say play judo or go yoga. These activities do not take an -ing ending and you do not play them like team games.

⭐ "My sister does karate after school."
⭐ "We do yoga in the gym."
4

Rule 4: WHICH SPORT / CLUB ...?

Questions & Short Answers

Ask Which sport do you like? or Which club do you join? to choose between activities. Always put the helping word do before you. Answer with a plain, short sentence.

⭐ "Which club do you join? I join the music club."
⭐ "Which sport do you like? I like tennis."
