Grammar Rules: Questions and Answers

Read the four simple rules below before you begin the practice.

1

Start questions with Do or Does

Start a question with Do for I, you, we, and they. Start with Does for he, she, and it. Do not use Does with you or they.

🎵 Do you listen to the radio?

🎵 Does he listen to the radio?

2

Use the plain verb with no -s

After Do or Does, use the plain verb with no -s. Does already shows the -s sound. Do not say "Does she plays" or "Does he sings".

🎻 Does your sister play the violin?

🎤 Does the singer write a song?

3

Make short answers

Answer with Yes or No + pronoun + do, does, don't, or doesn't. Do not repeat the main verb in a short answer. Never say "Yes, I like" or "No, she doesn't like".

🎷 Do you like jazz? Yes, I do.

🎺 Does Anna like jazz? No, she doesn't.

4

Say "play the" for instruments

Say play the before an instrument like the piano or the guitar. Do not use the before sports. Say "play football" or "play tennis", but "play the drum".

🎹 Do they play the piano at school?

⚽ Do you play football after class?

Formula to remember

Do / Does + Person + Plain Verb ?  ➔  Yes, I do. / No, he doesn't.
