⛰️ Summit Memory Match: Adventure & Risk
Race against the clock, match perilous mountain events, and link cause to consequence using the past perfect simple, the past perfect continuous, and narrative time clauses.
Rules of the Game
Notes for the teacher
- 1 Organize students into balanced teams of 3 to 4 and designate one Scorekeeper per squad.
- 2 Distribute 1 shuffled set (16 cards) per team and put the cards face down in 4 rows of 4.
- 3 Show one turn.
- 4 Check they use a connector (because, after, when, by the time).
- 5 Stop at 10 minutes and verify score sheets.
Rules for students
- 1 Flip exactly 2 cards face up on your turn so all teammates can inspect both clauses.
- 2 Verify that one card is a first event (past perfect) and the other is a logical later event (past simple).
- 3 If matched, speak 1 complete compound sentence joining both cards with a narrative conjunction out loud.
- 4 Keep the matched pair; each player keeps their own points. If not matched, turn both cards face down in place.
- 5 Play proceeds clockwise. The explorer with the highest points tally after all 8 pairs are claimed wins!
How to play the 20-minute game
Get into teams and set up
Split into trios or quartets, appoint scorekeeper, and shuffle 16 cards into a neat 4×4 grid.
Watch the teacher play a turn
Model 1 turn, refresh past perfect structure, and display key time linkers (when, by the time, after, because).
Play the memory game
Students turn cards, find pairs and say one sentence for each pair.
Count points and share sentences
Verify points on scorecards, announce the player with most points, and select each squad's finest sentence.
Talk about the game
Whole-class debrief addressing common pitfalls and answering prompt reflection questions.
Deck A: What happened first? (Past Perfect)
These events occurred prior to the main mountain incident. Note: Card ID numbers and header tones are randomized so players cannot cheat by matching numbers or colors.
Deck B: What happened next? (Past Simple)
These events took place subsequently as results, reactions, or narrative next steps. Match them against the correct preparatory clause in Deck A.
How to score points
Find a logical match
Successfully uncover and match 1 earlier cause card to its corresponding later effect card.
Use correct grammar
Link both clauses using an accurate time connector (when, by the time, after, because) with no tense errors.
Use a unit vocabulary word
Use one Unit word in your sentence (e.g. summit, altitude, terrain, expedition, cautious, rescue, exhausted, avalanche, thrill, determination).
6 helpful sentence starters
Unlock the +1 Vocab Bonus by embedding these helpful sentence starters into your spoken match claims:
"By the time we reached the summit..."

Say why the ground was hard to walk on.
"After our cautious mountain guide had..."
Say what the guide did, then what happened next.
"They were utterly exhausted because they had been..."
Say why they were tired.
"The emergency rescue crew mobilized after..."
Say who came to help, and after what.
"She felt an overwhelming sense of thrill and determination when..."
She felt very excited and full of determination when...
Teacher's guide for checking answers
If a group finds a different match that makes sense and says a correct sentence, accept it and give the points; the pairs above are the intended ones.

Card #44: 🗣️ "The guide told us to start early." - Starting early
Card #91: 🚁 "The climber fell and had to be rescued." - Helicopter rescue
Card #12: ⛺ "They were exhausted at the camp." - Being exhausted
Card #67: 🤩 "Ana was thrilled when the first flakes fell." - Feeling thrilled
⭐ Model: "Because Mia had trained for a year, she finished the long walk easily."
⚠️ Listen for: Students who skip the past perfect: "Mia trained for a year and finished..." is correct but not the target. Ask: Which happened first?
Pair 2 (#42 + #88) Theme: Weather blocking the path⭐ Model: "When the hikers awoke in the morning, the mountain path was blocked because heavy snow had fallen all night."
⚠️ Listen for: Tenses swapped. The earlier event needs the past perfect: "The path was blocked because the snow had fallen all night."
Pair 3 (#07 + #03) Theme: Getting lost⭐ Model: "We got lost in the forest because we had forgotten the map."
⚠️ Listen for: "We had forgot..." (Using the base/past form instead of past participle forgotten).
Pair 4 (#89 + #72) Theme: Being hungry and weak⭐ Model: "By midday, Tom felt weak because he had not eaten any breakfast."
⚠️ Listen for: "Tom had not ate..." (Incorrect irregular participle; must be had not eaten).
Pair 5 (#23 + #44) Theme: Making safe choices⭐ Model: "After the guide had checked the weather, he told us to start early."
⚠️ Listen for: "After the guide checked... he had told us..." (Putting the later command into Past Perfect).
Pair 6 (#61 + #91) Theme: Breaking equipment and needing help⭐ Model: "The rope had broken, so the climber fell and had to be rescued."
⚠️ Listen for: "The rope had broke..." (Colloquial error; enforce proper participle broken).
Pair 7 (#35 + #12) Theme: Walking for a long time⭐ Model: "By the time the mountaineers reached base camp, they were exhausted because they had been trekking for ten hours."
⚠️ Listen for: Confusing had been walking with were walking (Continuous emphasis over finished past span).
Pair 8 (#50 + #67) Theme: Seeing snow for the first time⭐ Model: "Ana was thrilled with genuine excitement when the first flakes fell because she had never seen snow."
⚠️ Listen for: "Ana had never saw..." (Confusion between simple past saw and participle seen).
3 difficulty levels and a task for fast finishers
Play with cards face up
Lay all 16 cards face up from the start. Focus entirely on matching logic and oral sentence production without memory strain. Great for practice.
Roll for a linking word
Standard memory match, but the teacher calls out or rolls a mandatory connector (e.g. By the time or Because) before the player speaks.
Say the later event first
Players MUST start every uttered sentence with the later event (past simple) clause before using an explanatory linker to reach the past perfect clause.
Add a third sentence
Teams who clear the 8 pairs before the 10m timer expires must invent an improvised third sentence detailing how the expedition survived the next morning.
Talk about the game: 3 questions
Which came first?
"When do we need the past perfect, and when is past simple enough?"
Walked or had been walking?
"How does "They had been walking for ten hours" feel different from "They had walked for ten hours"?"
Connect to your own life
"Think of a risky outdoor activity or trip you once took. Which event had already happened before everything changed?"
