IELTS Task 1: Weather Satellite Process Report

Examine the step-by-step process below and write a complete report describing how a small weather satellite is constructed and launched into orbit.

Writing Task Prompt

The diagram shows how a small weather satellite is built and put into orbit. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features.

Write at least 150 words.

Process Steps

1 Engineers build the body of the satellite and fit the solar panels and the instruments
↓
2 They test the satellite in a chamber that copies the cold of space and on a machine that shakes it like a launch
↓
3 A lorry carries the satellite to the launch site
↓
4 Workers place the satellite on top of a rocket
↓
5 The rocket lifts off and its first stage burns all of its fuel
↓
6 The first stage falls away and a second stage carries the satellite higher
↓
7 At the right height the satellite separates from the rocket
↓
8 The satellite opens its solar panels and starts to send data to the ground.

Sample Process Report & Key Phrases

Read this sample answer to see how to organize steps clearly and use strong connecting phrases.

📄 Model Answer

Word Count: 160 words

The diagram illustrates the process of building a small weather satellite and sending it into orbit. Overall, the process consists of eight main stages, beginning with manufacturing and testing on the ground, followed by transportation, rocket launch, and final positioning in space.

First, the satellite's body is built by engineers, and its instruments and solar panels are fitted. Following this, the satellite is tested inside a special chamber that copies the extreme cold of space, as well as on a machine that shakes it to simulate a launch. Once tested, it is carried to the launch site by lorry.

Next, workers place the satellite onto the top of a rocket. During liftoff, the first stage of the rocket burns all its fuel before falling away. Subsequently, a second stage carries the satellite higher into space. Upon reaching the right height, the satellite separates from the rocket. Finally, it opens its solar panels and begins transmitting data back to the ground.

💡 Useful Phrases & Why They Work

Study these highlighted phrases from the model answer to improve your own report writing.

"The diagram illustrates the process of..."

Why this works: This is a clear, natural way to start your report by telling the reader exactly what the picture shows.

"Overall, the process consists of..."

Why this works: It gives a big-picture summary right in the first paragraph, outlining the main parts from start to finish.

"...is built by engineers, and its instruments... are fitted"

Why this works: Using "is built" and "are fitted" keeps the focus on the satellite object rather than focusing on the workers.

"Following this,..."

Why this works: This smoothly connects one step to the next so your writing flows easily for the reader.

"Once tested,..."

Why this works: This links two actions together neatly by showing that one action must finish before the next step begins.

"Subsequently,..."

Why this works: This is a formal sequence word that adds variety so you do not repeat basic words like "next" or "then".

"Upon reaching the right height,..."

Why this works: This pinpoints the exact time when a specific action happens in a short, clear phrase.
