Message to a Friend
76 words

Hi Alex,

Last weekend I fixed a broken wooden chair in the kitchen. I did all the measuring and cutting by myself. Then my brother and I helped each other hold the heavy legs together. I used a screwdriver to tighten the loose screws and added some strong glue. It was hard to keep the wood straight, but we did it. Now it looks brand new and strong. Next time, I plan to paint it blue!

Useful Phrases: Why this works

Look at each bold phrase from the message. Here is how each phrase helps your reader:

1 "Last weekend I fixed..."

Why this works:

This tells your friend what happened and when it happened right at the start.

Example: "Last weekend I fixed the bedroom door."
2 "... by myself"

Why this works:

Use "by myself" to show you did the job alone without anyone helping you.

Example: "I fixed the leak myself, so I didn't need to call anybody."
3 "... and I helped each other ..."

Why this works:

Use "each other" when two people work together as a team to finish a heavy task.

Example: "My dad and I helped each other carry the wood."
4 "I used a [tool]..."

Why this works:

Naming the exact tool gives clear information about how you solved the problem.

Example: "I used a drill to make two clean holes."
5 "It was hard to ..., but ..."

Why this works:

This shows a real difficulty and shows that you finished the work successfully anyway.

Example: "It was hard to turn the screw, but I used a bigger tool."
