📖 Master Vocabulary: 10 Target Words

Study definitions, natural collocations, word forms, and memory anchors organized into three thematic clusters.

Word Meaning Common Collocations Word Forms Example Sentence Memory Tip
Cluster 1: Shortage & Dry Conditions
scarcity A severe state of being in short supply or difficult to obtain. acute scarcity, water scarcity, seasonal scarcity scarce (adj) Prolonged heat has caused an acute scarcity of clean drinking supplies across the valley. Link scarce with scare: when water is so rare it causes a scare.
drought A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall leading to severe water shortages. severe drought, prolonged drought, drought-stricken — Farmers watched their wheat fields wither away during the multi-year drought. Think of dry out → drought (sounds like "drout").
depletion The reduction in the number or quantity of something precious until little remains. groundwater depletion, resource depletion, rapid depletion deplete (v) Uncontrolled pumping has caused the depletion of underground aquifers at an alarming pace. Opposite of complete: to "de-plete" is to empty something out completely.
arid Having little or no rain; too dry or barren to support vegetation naturally. arid climate, arid zone, semi-arid plateau aridity (n) Cacti and drought-resistant shrubs thrive best in this naturally arid terrain. Sounds like air-id: all hot air, zero moisture.
Cluster 2: Using & Storing Water
irrigation The artificial application of water to land or soil to assist the growth of crops. drip irrigation, irrigation canal, spray irrigation irrigate (v) Modern drip irrigation delivers moisture directly to plant roots, cutting water waste by half. Think of an artificial river feeding crops → irri-gation.
reservoir A large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply. tap into a reservoir, fill a reservoir, subterranean reservoir — Water levels in the municipal reservoir dropped to thirty percent capacity by late August. Direct relative of reserve: a giant container built to keep water in reserve.
consumption The using up of a resource, or the amount of that resource consumed. water consumption, curb consumption, domestic consumption consume (v), consumer (n) The government urged factories to curb excessive water consumption during peak summer. You consume food or energy; water consumption is what homes and farms use up.
Cluster 3: Managing & Protecting Supplies
allocate To distribute resources or duties for a particular purpose according to a plan. allocate water quotas, allocate resources, fairly allocate allocation (n) Authorities must allocate sufficient water rations between commercial farms and towns. Connect with locate: assign a portion to its proper location.
contaminate To make something impure, poisonous, or unfit for use by adding harmful substances. contaminate groundwater, chemical contamination, heavily contaminated contamination (n), contaminated (adj) Industrial waste leaking from the pipeline threatens to contaminate local freshwater wells. Think of contact with toxic: unwanted contact ruins the water.
replenish To fill something up again; restore to a previous level or condition. replenish aquifers, replenish reserves, replenish supplies — Heavy winter snowfall is essential to replenish the mountain reservoirs before spring. Contains plenty: to re-plenish is to make water supplies plentiful again.

Practice Exercises (16 Questions)

Test collocations, dialogues, context precision, and word transformations.

🎯
1

Task 1: Collocation Matrix (Water Verbs & Objects)

Match each strong water action verb on the left to its single best matching resource noun.

Verb
farmland
consumption
aquifers
quotas
1. curb / reduce
____farmland ____consumption ____aquifers ____quotas
2. allocate / share out
____farmland ____consumption ____aquifers ____quotas
3. irrigate / water
____farmland ____consumption ____aquifers ____quotas
4. replenish / restore
____farmland ____consumption ____aquifers ____quotas
Let's check the answers and explanations.

1. curb/reduce → consumption | 2. allocate/share out → quotas | 3. irrigate/water → farmland | 4. replenish/restore → aquifers

2

Task 2: Dialogue Gap-Fill (Regional Water Board)

Complete the committee exchange using words from the shuffled bank below. Use each word exactly once.

drought allocate arid reservoir

Director: "Our territory is already naturally ____ (word 1) , but this two-year rainfall deficit has triggered an outright agricultural crisis."

Hydrologist: "Indeed. If this prolonged ____ (word 2) continues through autumn, water reserves behind the regional dam will collapse completely."

Director: "How much usable volume currently remains in the primary municipal ____ (word 3) ?"

Hydrologist: "Barely thirty percent. We must immediately ____ (word 4) strict weekly quotas to every commercial grower until winter storms arrive."

Here are the correct answers.

Blank 1: arid | Blank 2: drought | Blank 3: reservoir | Blank 4: allocate

3

Task 3: Choose the Word (Contextual Precision)

Select the single word that fits both the natural collocation and the formal environmental context.

1. After consecutive failed monsoons, the province experienced acute water ________, leaving millions reliant on emergency tanker deliveries.

____ a. scarcity ____ b. poverty ____ c. emptiness

2. A devastating multi-year ________ permanently lowered the water table.

____ a. drought ____ b. blizzard ____ c. hurricane

3. Shifting from surface flood channels to automated drip ________ allowed desert orchards to flourish while conserving precious groundwater.

____ a. soaking ____ b. irrigation ____ c. drenching ____ d. sprinkling

4. Excessive extraction for export-oriented agribusiness has accelerated the rapid ________ of underground aquifers across the central basin.

____ a. depletion ____ b. replenishment ____ c. aridity ____ d. drought
Here are the correct answers.

1: a (scarcity) | 2: a (drought) | 3: b (irrigation) | 4: a (depletion)
