How the London Fire Brigade Began
The London Fire Brigade says that before 1866, firefighters in London worked for insurance companies. These companies paid money when a house burned. Soon, the insurance companies told the government that they did not want to be responsible for fire protection. In 1866, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade began as a public service for all people in London. Its first Chief Officer was Captain Eyre Massey Shaw. He gave the firefighters a new uniform like the uniform of sailors. From 1867 to 1871, the brigade built 26 fire stations with rooms for firefighters and their families. In 1904, the name changed to the London Fire Brigade.
