Level C1 12 Minutes
Unit: Misinformation & Trust in Science

🔬 not so much … as, rather than, if anything, as opposed to / if not

Learn four small patterns that say "this one, not that one" or "a little more than that".

👩‍🏫

For the Teacher

Run this 12-minute sprint by letting learners read the table for 4 minutes, then complete the tasks. Check answers as a whole group by having students explain why the other options fail.

🎒

For the Learner

First, read the four simple rules below and notice the underlined words in each sentence. Next, solve the 12 puzzles from easy to hard to test your skill.

!

Four patterns to learn

1. not so much A as B / less A than B B is the real one

Use it to say that B is the real answer and A is not. Put the same kind of word in A and in B (two names, or two describing words).

Example A:

My cat is not so much lazy as sleepy.

Example B:

The report was less a real test than a quick guess.

2. rather than this, not that

Use it to say this one, not that one. It means "instead of". Use the same kind of word on both sides: an action with an action, a name with a name.

Example A:

We chose to check the facts rather than believe the post.

Example B:

Some people share a post rather than read it.

3. if anything a little the other way

Use it after a sentence with "not". It says: the truth is a little bit the other way. Write a comma after it.

Example A:

The test did not show a problem; if anything, it showed the plan was good.

Example B:

He is not sad; if anything, he is a little bit happy.

4. as opposed to / if not very different / even more

as opposed to means these two things are very different. if not means maybe even more: put a stronger word after it.

Example A:

The report uses real numbers, as opposed to guesses.

Example B:

It was a good, if not great, idea.

🎯 Practice Arena (12 Tasks)

Easy ➔ Hard
Task 1 · Multiple Choice (instead)

Choose the sentence that correctly links both actions:

____ The lab chose to replicate the test rather than checking old notes ____ The lab chose to replicate the test rather than check old notes ____ The lab chose to replicate the test rather than to checking old notes
Task 2 · Multiple Choice (different)

Choose the sentence that correctly compares the two ideas:

____ The paper proved a real correlation as opposed to a mere anecdote ____ The paper proved a real correlation as opposed of a mere anecdote ____ The paper proved a real correlation as opposing to a mere anecdote
Task 3 · Multiple Choice (opposite)

Choose the sentence that gives a slight correction after a negative thought:

____ The sceptic accepted the claims; if anything, he demanded more proof. ____ The sceptic did not doubt the claims; if nothing, he demanded more proof. ____ The sceptic did not accept the claims; if anything, he demanded more proof.
Task 4 · Rewrite the Sentence (better)

Rewrite the sentence using not so much ... as:

"The online article was sensational hype rather than real scientific reporting."

Type the exact complete sentence:

____
Task 5 · Rewrite the Sentence (degree)

Rewrite the sentence using less ... than:

"The finding was more an accidental correlation and not a true consensus."

Complete the sentence below:

The finding was ____
Task 6 · Rewrite the Sentence (prefer)

Rewrite the sentence using rather than:

"The scientists preferred to debunk the myth instead of ignoring it."

Complete the sentence below:

The scientists decided to ____
Task 7 · Fill the Gap (stronger)

Fill in the missing structure to add a stronger word:

The reviewer spotted a subtle bias, ____ outright fraud, in the published charts.
Task 8 · Fill the Gap (contrast)

Fill in the phrase that sets up a direct contrast:

The team examined a randomized sample, ____ a handpicked group of friendly volunteers.
Task 9 · Fill the Gap (balance)

Fill in the gap so that the second idea is the accurate one:

The sudden server crash was ____ a coordinated conspiracy as a routine software glitch.
Task 10 · Fix the Chat Error (parallel)

Read the message below. One word after rather than breaks the pattern.

"Hey! We must investigate researcher bias rather than jumping to quick conclusions. Read the full paper first!"

Type only the corrected word that should replace "jumping":

____
Task 11 · Fix the Chat Error (negative)

Read this text message. The writer forgot that if anything needs a negative clause before it.

"Our team managed to replicate the trial data; if anything, our final scores ended up much higher."

Which sentence fixes the first part so that "if anything" is used correctly?

____ Our team succeeded to replicate the trial data ____ Our team did not fail to replicate the trial data ____ Our team was replicating the trial data
Task 12 · Fix the Chat Error (pair)
