📐 The 4 Golden Rules of Causatives
Form: have / get + object + V3 (past participle)| Row | Grammar Rule | Fashion Model Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| 1 |
have + object + past participle
Says that someone else does a job for you (often a paid professional or service). |
"She had her coat mended at the shop." |
| 2 |
get + object + past participle
Has the same meaning as "have", but sounds more informal and conversational. |
"He got his shirt cleaned before the interview." |
| 3 |
Tense variation
The tense is shown by have or get, while the past participle never changes form. |
"She is having a dress altered for the wedding." |
| 4 |
Active voice (DIY)
If you do the job yourself, use a normal active verb—do NOT use have or get. |
"I mended my shirt myself." |
✅ Arranging a Professional Service
Use the causative when a tailor, dry cleaner, or cobbler does the physical work.
"I had my trousers shortened by the tailor."
⚠️ Doing It Yourself (No Causative)
Do not add "have" or "get" if you pick up the needle and thread on your own.
"I shortened my trousers with needle and thread."
