RULE TABLE

4 Core Reference Rules

1. the former / the latter Rule #1
Use the former for the first item and the latter for the second item when you have exactly two things. The action word matches the word it replaces.
Ex 1:

The site has a scaffold and a crane: the former was checked on Monday and the latter on Tuesday.

Ex 2:

Workers must inspect the harness and the helmet; the former prevents falls while the latter protects the head.

2. this / that / these / those (as nouns) Rule #2
Use these words alone so you do not repeat a full sentence or idea. This and these point to what you just said, while that and those point to something further back.
Ex 1:

The crew ignored the warning signs, and this caused most of the damage.

Ex 2:

Supervisors introduced new protective rules, but those were hard to follow on the site.

3. such / such a / such as Rule #3
Use such before words to mean this kind of thing. Add a or an for one item, but no a or an for many items. Use such as when you give real examples.
Ex 1:

A rope can break, and such a failure can hurt a whole team.

Ex 2:

The factory spilled a dangerous chemical, but such accidents can be stopped with strict rules.

4. respectively / namely / that is Rule #4
Put respectively at the end of two matching lists to show the pair order with no comma before it. Put namely or that is after a general word with a comma before it to give exact details.
Ex 1:

The ladder and the rope failed on Monday and Friday respectively.

Ex 2:

The team skipped the safety procedure, namely the daily equipment check.

⚠️

GOLDEN SAFETY RULE FOR "THE FORMER / THE LATTER"

Never use the former or the latter when you list three or more things! For 3 or more items, always say the first, the second, or the third.

✓

DO THIS (CORRECT)

  • • ...failed on Monday and Friday respectively. (No comma before respectively)
  • • Dangerous chemicals require such protective gear. (such + noun with no a or an)
  • • We brought two tools, namely a wrench and a harness. (comma before namely)
✕

AVOID THIS (INCORRECT)

  • • ...failed on Monday and Friday, respectively.
  • • Dangerous chemicals require such a protective gear.
  • • We brought three items: helmet, harness, boots; the former was new.
