Core Grammar Rules

Study how each verb connects with everyday words.

1

make vs do

Use make when you create or produce something new. Use do for regular jobs, duties, and everyday activities. You cannot swap these two words.

• She made a plan and did the assignment in one evening.

• He did the shopping before midnight.

2

take (time, photos, events)

Use take with minutes, pictures, and events. Always say take part in when you join something, never "take part to".

• Our group takes part in the weekly quiz and takes a screenshot of every slide.

• It takes time to upload large video files.

3

have (thoughts, troubles, effects)

Use have with effects, problems, and ideas. It connects with a naming word instead of using a single action word.

• A slow connection can have a bad effect on how people learn.

• We had a problem with the course fee payment.

4

get (become / receive)

Use get with a describing word to mean become. In casual talk, use it with a thing to mean receive.

• You will get a certificate after you pass the course.
