📘 Grammar Rules Summary
| # | Rule Explanation | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | We use this structure to talk about past events that never happened. It helps us imagine a different result in the past. |
• If the bus had been on time, we would have reached the hotel before dark. • If the train hadn't run out of fuel, we would have made our connection. |
| 2 | You can change the order of the two parts in your sentence. Put a comma after the first part only when it starts with If. When the If part comes second, do not use a comma. |
• If we had checked the schedule, we would have seen the cancellation. • I would have asked for help if I had known the way. |
| 3 | Use hadn't in the first part and wouldn't have in the second part for negative sentences. Always write would have, and never write would of. In speaking, people say would've. |
• If we hadn't suffered bad luck, we wouldn't have missed our connection. • If she hadn't lost her ticket, she wouldn't have had to buy another one. |
| 4 | Never put would have in the If part of the sentence. If the result is only possible, use might have or could have instead of would have. |
• If it hadn't rained, we might have walked to the station. • If you had shared your regret earlier, we could have helped you. |
