Four ways to give an idea
What about ...? / How about ...?
Use it to offer an idea. After about, put an action word with -ing (What about taking) or the name of a thing (How about a picnic). Say What about taking, not What about take.
• What about taking the coast road instead?
• How about a scenic detour across the valley?
We could ...
Use it to give one idea. It sounds gentle, because you are not telling people what to do. Put the plain action word after could. Say We could stop, not We could to stop.
• We could stop at the lake for lunch.
• We could refuel before we enter the motorway.
I suggest ...
Use it to give your plan. After suggest, use an -ing word (I suggest leaving), or use that we and a plain action word (I suggest that we check). Say I suggest leaving, not I suggest to leave.
• I suggest leaving before sunrise to miss the traffic.
• I suggest that we check the rental car brakes on this steep hill.
Shall we ...? / Why don't we ...?
Use them to ask a friend to do something with you. Put the plain action word after we, with no to. Say Shall we stay, not Shall we staying. You can answer Good idea or Yes, let's.
• Why don't we sleep in a small town tonight?
• Shall we stay overnight before driving down this bumpy lane?
Common Slip: We say "I suggest renting a GPS" or "I suggest that we rent a GPS". We never say "I suggest to rent".
