Rule Board: 4 Ways to Talk About Purpose
Study the pattern and compare the right way with common mistakes.
A person's action: to + base verb
We use to + base verb to say why a person does something. It answers the question Why? Never add extra words like because of before the verb.
Example 1
"She digs a small hole to plant the bulb."Example 2
"He uses a rake to collect leaves."A tool's job: for + verb-ing
We use for + verb-ing to say what a thing is used for. The tool or object is the subject of the sentence. Never write a plain verb like A rake is for collect.
Example 1
"A pot is for keeping a plant on a balcony."Example 2
"A hose is for watering the garden."Common trap: never use for + base verb for people
We never say for + base verb or for to + verb for a person's reason. When a person moves or acts, always choose to and the simple verb.
Compare
✅ "He went outside to water the plants."
❌ He went outside for water the plants.
Compare
✅ "I bought a spade to remove the hard soil."
❌ I bought a spade for to remove the hard soil.
Things we keep: for + noun vs for + -ing
for + a noun says who or what something is kept for. A for + -ing phrase says the active job of the tool. Both patterns are natural.
Corner
"This corner is for tomatoes." / "This corner is for storing tomatoes."Bag
"This bag is for seeds." / "This bag is for carrying seeds."Practice Field: 12 Exercises
