📖 4 Rules to Learn

Look at the right sentence and the wrong sentence side by side.

Rule 1: and (add)

Use and to add one more thing. It joins two things or ideas that go together. Say I like milk and tea. Do not say I like milk but tea.

✅ Right: We have tea and biscuits after school.
❌ Wrong: We have tea but biscuits after school.
Rule 2: but (different)

Use but when the second idea is different from the first one. Say The tea is hot but the milk is cold. Do not use and when the two ideas are different.

✅ Right: The nuts are salty but the biscuits are sweet.
❌ Wrong: The nuts are salty and the biscuits are sweet.
Rule 3: or (choose)

Use or when you ask someone to choose. They pick one thing. Say Is it sweet or salty? Do not say Is it sweet but salty?

✅ Right: Do you want milk or water?
❌ Wrong: Do you want milk but water?
Rule 4: no to two things: don't ... or

After don't, use or when you say no to two things. Say I don't like milk or tea. Do not say I don't like milk and tea.

✅ Right: I don't like nuts or cheese.
❌ Wrong: I don't like nuts and cheese.
